Tribute to Cheryl Taustin

Cheryl Taustin was a beacon of love, talent, and joy within the Temple Bat Yam community. Her impact was profound, touching countless lives from Salisbury to Ocean City and beyond. If 100 rabbis had served the TBY congregation, they would all agree on how beloved Cheryl was, how she embodied joy and beauty, and how deeply she touched the hearts and souls of those she encountered.

Cheryl worked closely with her colleagues, crafting Sabbath and High Holiday services that were not just spiritually uplifting, but also deeply meaningful. Cheryl’s dedication was unwavering, and her commitment to her faith and her congregation was evident in everything she did.

Just a few months ago, Cheryl was by the rabbi’s side, assisting at the funeral of Richard Leiner. Even as rabbi prepared for the High Holidays, she generously shared her notes, affectionately known as her “pray by pray grids,” ensuring that the upcoming services would be just as special as those she had led in the past. Two weeks ago, they were planning the memorial service for Steve Winkler together, and now, heartbreakingly, they find themselves honoring her memory instead.

In June, after her return from Florida, Cheryl’s presence on the bimah was a shining light. Her beautiful voice filled the sanctuary once more, and it was clear how much she had been missed. Today, that absence is felt even more deeply by all who knew her.

A member of the congregation recently remarked on how Cheryl’s love for Judaism always came through in her singing. She sang with so much ruach, so much spirit, pouring her heart and soul into every note. Cheryl was a private person, and at her last Shabbat service as cantor in December, she declined any tribute or honors. But now, with heavy hearts, her community expresses their deep gratitude.

For more than thirty years, Cheryl shared her voice and spirit with Temple Bat Yam, bringing joy and beauty to all who had the privilege of hearing her. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and her kindness and generosity will be remembered by all who knew her.

Cheryl Taustin was, and always will be, missed terribly. May her soul be wrapped in the bonds of eternal life, and may she rest in peace. Amen.
